The CanopyStyle Audits
The CanopyStyle Audits of global producers of man made cellulosic fiber (ie. rayon and viscose) are based on a robust set of criteria created by Canopy with approval of the CanopyStyle Leaders for Forest Conservation comprised of Inditex/Zara, H&M, EILEEN FISHER, Stella McCartney and Marks & Spencer.
These criteria are designed to establish a credible, third-party verification process to be undertaken by viscose producers, and the audits are to be used by apparel brands, retailers, and designers as one of the reference points as they implement their CanopyStyle sourcing policies.
Canopy’s approach to these audits is collaborative. The audits help producers uncover challenges, recognize opportunities and support them on their journey to avoid sourcing from the world’s Ancient and Endangered Forests and other controversial sources. In addition to providing guidance for brands, the audits are a learning process for producers. They are not pass/fail, but rather help identify risk and facilitate change, moving producers towards more sustainable sourcing and the avoidance of controversial supply.
The CanopyStyle audits are not a certification system, but a risk-based verification framework that is designed to provide producers with the opportunity to learn and act. The audits capture a moment in time, rather than providing chain of custody or claims-based assurances. The audits are not to be cited as a form of certification, but used as a tool to identify supply-chain risk.
The CanopyStyle Audit Guidelines describe how auditors will verify that producers are meeting the criteria and whether and when they can be recognized as being at low risk of sourcing from ancient and endangered forests or controversial sources.
Audits will vary in terms of scale and complexity depending on the size and scope of the producer, and potential for risk with some requiring a deeper dive. As a result, there is no set duration for the auditing process, as each audit is approached individually. The auditors’ on-site assessment may take place over one or two days, but the process itself is extensive and in-depth. Audit planning, preparation, documentation and evaluation occurs over a period of weeks, sometimes months.
